The iPhone 12 will be unveiled during the month of October 2020. This year, Apple will unveil 4 different smartphones compatible with 5G. Release date, price, technical sheet, here is everything we know at this stage about the next iPhone.
The iPhone 11, Pro and Pro Max had initially made us feel like a disappointment: Apple did not know how to make us dream with new technologies ahead of the market, as at the time of the iPhone X. The iPhone 11 generation was that of a technological catch-up on Android competition which has clearly increased.
The iPhone 11 seemed destined to be first of the class in a maximum of possible categories (screen, photo, autonomy, biometrics, software support). And from this point of view, it was rather a success.
This time four iPhone 12 models are expected, against three in 2019. The iPhone 11, the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max would be replaced by the iPhone 12 and several variations. According to the most recent leak, the iPhone 12 wouldn’t be the cheapest of its siblings , unlike the iPhone 11, which was priced lower than the two Pro models. The iPhone 12 would be an intermediate model. It would be accompanied by the iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 12 Mini.
iPhone 12 release Date
This year, Apple has confirmed that the iPhone 12 will be postponed for a few weeks due to coronavirus. Moreover, persistent rumors seem to confirm a partial launch of the range with another event set for the beginning of 2021, barely a few months later.
Apple would present the iPhone 12 during a keynote scheduled for October 13 . Pre-orders would be open the following Friday, October 16, before arriving in store on October 23. Apple also announce its first headphones with active noise reduction, the AirPods Studio and AirTags.
iPhone 12 Price
Apple should better segment demand with the price of iPhone 12. The latest reports on the subject indeed speak of an increase from $50 to $100 for 5G models. But also an iPhone 12 mini, the price of which could start at 50 dollars cheaper than the iPhone 11 before it. Here are the prices we expect at this point :
iPhone 12 Mini: $649(64 GB), $699(128 GB), $799(256 GB)
iPhone 12: $749(64 GB), $799(128 GB), $899(256 GB)
iPhone 12 Pro: $999(128 GB), $1099(256 GB), $1299(512 GB)
iPhone 12 Pro Max: $1099(128 GB), $1199(256 GB), $1399(512 GB)
There could also be an iPhone 12s which could be a 4G model – but the precise information on its spec sheet remains incomplete to date.
technical Specification of the iPhone 12
Information is accumulating around the technical sheet for the future iPhones of 2020. One thing is certain: like every new generation, it will have a new in-house SoC. We also expect significantly improved photo sensors and that the company will make further progress in terms of battery capacity and autonomy.
A14 Bionic SoC with up to 6 GB of RAM
We are starting to know some details about the SoC A14 that these iPhones should carry. Apple has entrusted its manufacture to the founder TSMC. These chips will be the first on a consumer product to be engraved in 5 nm via the FinFET EUV (TSMC) process. Journalist Jason Cross calculated that they could have 15 billion transistors compared to 8.5 billion transistors on the previous generation, and a Geekbench score close to that of entry-level MacBook Pros (if such a thing exists).
According to a leak, the performance will be impressive: + 40% for the CPU and + 50% for the GPU compared to the A13 Bionic chip . For the time being, however, the leaks are contradictory. On AnTuTu, an iPhone 12 Pro Max benchmark showered performance expectations. According to the benchmark, the SoC A14 would be only 9% faster than the A13 of the iPhone 11. For the first time, Apple would integrate more than 4 GB of RAM in an iPhone.
The iPhone 12 Pro and Max would indeed have 6 GB of RAM . The standard variants should for their part deal with 4 GB. Another Becnhmar appeared in early October offered a new overview of the performance of the Apple A14 chip. The SoC iPhone 12 could be up to 20% faster than its predecessor .
64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB of internal storage
The future iPhone 12 should be offered in 64 GB , 128 GB and 256 GB versions . However, we expected that Apple no longer offers a smartphone below 128 GB of RAM, but obviously the company preferred to persist with the 64 GB option for smaller models, ie iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. The Pro variants should all carry either 128 GB or 256 GB.
Elongated L-shaped motherboard
According to a photo that appeared on the web, Apple has developed an elongated L-shaped motherboard for the iPhone 12 . Less compact than the printed circuit board of previous generations of iPhone, this card could allow Apple to save space in its smartphone, especially to integrate larger batteries. Not surprisingly, the memory unit that comes with the motherboard was provided by Samsung.
Apple is expected to improve its photo sensors again this year. Apple would rely on 12-megapixel photo sensors larger than those of the iPhone 11. The firm would therefore ignore the 64 megapixel module mentioned by some leaks. The latest rumors speak of a clear progress in terms of depth of field detection thanks to a ToF module renamed LiDAR scanner as on the new iPad Pro 2020. This module would be reserved for iPhone 12 Pro and provided by Sony.
This feature is essential, for example, in Portrait modes as well as to generate a precise blur around a subject, the famous Bokeh effect. The smartphone could thus carry on its back a 3D laser sensor , or another type of component capable of establishing a precise map of depth of field. In addition, whatever its sensors and optics, the smartphone should benefit from better image processing thanks to its new SoC that is expected to be muscular.
It could thus take more photos at a time when the shooting is triggered, and use this increased number of shots to generate brighter or more detailed photos depending on the situation. From this point of view, real-time image processing could also benefit video shooting, with quality image effects and reprocessing on the fly. The combination of the new sensors and the new chip is also credited with the ability to shoot in 4K at 240 frames per second.
The iPhone 12 should benefit from a new type of autofocus that is more precise and motorized. A prelude before the arrival of new optics including a periscope sensor from the iPhone 13 in 2022. In addition, a patent recently filed by Apple suggests that the firm could compress photos and videos directly on the sensors, to save as much as possible processor time and battery.
Last year, the iPhone 11 welcomed an ultra-wide-angle sensor for the first time. The new models should inherit this advance in addition to the usual wide angle lens. The latest news is that the iPhone 12’s wide-angle sensor failed internal quality control within weeks of launch. But that shouldn’t have any further impact on the release date.
We have seen it with the iPhone 11 Pro Max: Apple has made significant progress in terms of autonomy. And it is likely that the manufacturer will focus its efforts again on this point. Especially since its A14 SoC is engraved in 5 nm and potentially contains many more transistors than the previous generation – undoubtedly the sign of improved energy management which will therefore also result in increased autonomy.
The battery capacities would nevertheless be significantly reduced compared to the previous generation. Including a 2,815 mAh battery on the iPhone 12 Pro . Although it’s hard to conclude anything about battery life at this point, to cut costs, Apple has reportedly decided to incorporate a cheaper battery on the iPhone 12s .
No USB type C but lightning port
The iPhone 12 should carry a proprietary Lightning charging port again this year . This cable, which appeared before USB type C connectors (Apple also participated in their development) has the advantage of being the standard in the iPhone ecosystem, but also its more robust design than the relatively fragile USB type C connectors.
In fact, Apple could skip the universal connector altogether by adopting a Smart Connector on the next iteration (iPhone 13) – in other words, magnetized surface connectors that would allow Apple to create a smartphone entirely devoid of ports, and we also imagine buttons.
The next iPhones will have screen sizes that are slightly larger or smaller than what was seen on the iPhone 11 generation. Thus, the iPhone 12 Pro Max would have a 6.7 ″ screen (against 6.5 ″ on the iPhone 11 Pro Max) and the iPhone 12 Mini have a 5.45 ″ screen (compared to 5.8 ″ on the iPhone 11 Pro). The iOS 14 beta also confirms the existence of a compact version 5.4 ″. The iPhone 12 Mini is said to be more compact than the 2020 iPhone SE according to models . The other two models would be equipped with 6.1-inch screens.
OLED for every variant
A persistent noise evokes the abandonment of LCD technology on the three iPhone 12 models . The iPhone 11 (neither Pro nor Pro Max) indeed has an IPS LCD screen unlike the other models. One way of undoubtedly lowering production costs.
In detail, the iPhone 12 would have a screen with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels (475 ppi). For its part, the iPhone 12 Max would have a 2532 x 1170, 460 ppi screen. Finally, the iPhone 12 Pro would have a 2532 x 1170, 460 ppi screen and the 12 Pro Max would have a 2778 x 1284 pixel, 458 ppi panel. 80% of OLED screens would be supplied by Samsung . The rest of the tiles would be manufactured by LG and BOE.
120 Hz screen refresh rate
Many rumors that appeared in recent months assured that the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max would be covered with a screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Apple would have tested several sublime prototypes of a ProMotion screen similar to that of the iPad Pro.
An increased refresh rate means smoother movement and reduced response time, which can be a plus in some games. According to the latest news, this screen would be able to go from 60 to 120 Hz depending on the content displayed on the screen of the iPhone 12. The operation of the panel could make it possible to limit additional energy consumption.
Unfortunately, Apple has reportedly decided to reserve the 120Hz screen for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This year, the large format variant would be much higher in the game than the iPhone 12 Pro. Several major new features would be reserved for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Notch or borderless?
Finally one of the questions that will come up the most on this screen – until we finally have the answer – is: “will it have a notch?”. Apple popularized the notch by launching its iPhone X in 2017. This cutout on the top of the screen was until now a necessary evil to integrate advanced sensors like those of Face ID on the front face in smartphones whose borders melt like sorrow.
However, in a short time, technology has evolved. So much so that it has become possible to integrate a fingerprint sensor under screens. But it does not stop there: several manufacturers have shown prototypes of photo sensors also hidden under the glass . The dream of a rectangle completely covered with a screen is well and truly becoming reality.
Face ID or Touch ID?
Apple has touted its Face ID facial recognition technology as the most convenient and secure method of unlocking your smartphone. Even more than the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Rumors suggest two possibilities. In a first scenario, Face ID would be completely replaced by a fingerprint reader under the screen . But other rumors suggest a much smaller Face ID device , which could thus fit in a redesigned notch, be hidden in the border or even go completely under the screen. The prospect of a simply smaller Face ID notch seems the most likely.
Apple missed out on 5G in 2019 – and arguably wasn’t wrong to do so, given that the technology is ultimately only available, at this point, in a few countries and coverage areas. It is nevertheless likely that the firm offers 5G compatibility on the 4 variants of iPhone 12 . According to the latest information we have, Apple could use the Snapdragon X55 modem to access these networks.
The latest news is that all iPhone 12s will be 5G compatible. On the other hand, only the iPhone 12 Pro Max sold in the USA, Japan and South Korea would benefit from ultra-fast millimeter 5G . The models sold in France will all be confined to the 5G Sub-6GHz, less swift. Apple should then launch a cheaper 4G variant in early 2021.
iPhone 12 Design
Apple usually changes its design every two generations. We can therefore expect that the fundamentals introduced on Generation 11 will remain the same . The backs of more expensive devices should be covered with frosted glass, except for the logo (shiny glass) and the finish of the photo sensor which is also shiny.
The chassis of these devices should again be made of stainless steel this year. There would be a very attractive new blue-purple colorway. The arrival of a flat chassis like the last iPad Pro 2020 , and iPhone 4-5S seems to be confirmed in the latest leaks . In particular in the first “official” photo of the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max that appeared on the site of the manufacturer of cases Rhinoshield.
The leak of a mockup spotted in in iOS 14 confirms the presence of a LiDAR scanner on the back of the iPhone 12, which upsets the layout that now occupies the four corners of the square container of the photo block, unlike the triangular layout on the iPhone 11 Pro. 3D printed models also show models without lidar scanner . This is also the case for several gripes that have appeared on the net. It is possible that this sensor is in fact reserved for the Pro Max version.
Accessories in the IPhone 12 box
Apple seems for some time to remove an accessory almost every release. The iPhone 11 Pro Max was indeed delivered with wired EarPods (Lightning) a small USB type C to Lightning cable and a USB type C charging pad. But unlike the iPhone XS, Apple decided to omit the Lightning adapter. to 3.5mm audio port yet extremely convenient.
This year, Apple may take the wired EarPods out of the box to push you into buying the AirPods . Moreover, a subtle change appeared in the iOS 14.2 update confirms the disappearance of the headphones included in the box.
In addition, everything now indicates that Apple will no longer include a charger in the box . As the firm has just done with the new Apple Watch 6 and Apple SE . The 20W charger will therefore be sold separately on the market, Apple having decided to abandon production of the 5W and 18W chargers.
Apple puts forward a very focused speech on the environment to justify its decision. The firm considers that its users already have power adapters at home. In fact the only accessory included would be a brand new woven USB Type C to Lightning cable with more durable connectors. The iPhone 12 box would, thanks to these less accessories, be smaller and “exquisite”. In Europe, however, the law could force the company to still include the charger and wired headphones.
