OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro: price, release date, fact sheet, everything you need to know

OnePlus 9 has a few surprises in store for us: launched in March 2021 and three variants with a more affordable OnePlus 9 Lite are added to the new features concerning the photo, the screen or even the performance. Here’s all the information available on OnePlus’ new flagships.

After its 8 and 8T, OnePlus is now working on the OnePlus 9series. But what is the Chinese manufacturer preparing us for these new versions? The brand has made a change in strategy in recent years, and we should still have surprises. Price, launch date, technical specifications… here’s everything we know about OnePlus 9 smartphones.

OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9 Lite

In its early days, OnePlus only released one smartphone for every iteration. Then, a new “T” model began to appear about six months after the release of a mobile. For a long time, this was the manufacturer’s trademark, which therefore marketed two mobiles each year. Then came the “Pro” models, underlining OnePlus’s ambitions in the high-end market, the brand then abandoning the “flagship killers” that had made it famous. Now, OnePlus seems to be heading for a market flood strategy. Like most other manufacturers (Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi…), OnePlus offers many references covering a wide price range to appeal to a majority of consumers.

We recently had the OnePlus Nord range, designed to reach customers looking for a more affordable smartphone. OnePlus will continue to multiply the products by adding this time a model to its main range: the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro will be accompanied by a OnePlus 9 Lite. So three variants of OnePlus 9 are waiting for us.

The code name for the OnePlus 9 series internally is “lemonade.” The OnePlus teams opted for “instant noodles” for the OnePlus 8 and “kebab” for the OnePlus 8T.

price of OnePlus 9

At the moment, there are no reliable leaks that indicate a rate for OnePlus 9. But based on the previous generation, one can guess with some precision the prices to be expected. The OnePlus 8 was available for release in France at 699 euros for the 8GB variant of RAM 128GB of storage space and 799 euros for 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal memory. The OnePlus 8 Pro 8/128GB was priced at 899 euros, while the OnePlus 8 Pro 12/256GB was available for 999 euros.

We can therefore envisage a similar price range for the new generation of OnePlus. Don’t expect a drop in price, now that the brand has entry and mid-range smartphones in its catalog. Moreover, it is hard to see the manufacturer exceeding the symbolic mark of 1000 euros this year, while no major innovation is expected. The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro are expected to take back the prices of their predecessors. The OnePlus 9 Lite will be a more affordable gateway to the series. It could be sold between 499 and 599 euros.

release date of OnePlus 9

Android manufacturers seem to have spread the word: they are all getting ahead of their usual schedule. Samsung will launch its Galaxy S21 in mid-January instead of February when Xiaomi will unveil its Mi 11 at the end of December and not in January 2021. OnePlus has also decided to anticipate a few weeks with a OnePlus 9 expected for the month of March 2021, while its first flagships of the year normally arrive in April or May.

Generally, OnePlus opens pre-orders on the same day as the smartphones are presented, with a bonus accessory. Then a week later, the devices are officially available on the market.

OnePlus 9 Technical SPecification

In this table you will find a summary of the presumed technical specifications of The OnePlus 9 Lite, OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. Keep in mind that information is still missing and that some data may change.

The OnePlus 9 Lite is the Case for OnePlus 8T, while the OnePlus 9 features elements of the OnePlus 8 and 8T. The OnePlus 9 Pro is like a mix of OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8T. As is often the case with OnePlus, the new products come in small touches and we take back what worked well on the later models.

Design of OnePlus 9

Several leaks have given us a good overview of what the OnePlus 9 series smartphones will look like. No big surprise, they have a look that comes very close to the OnePlus 8T. The photo sensors positioned in the middle of the camera’s back vertically will have survived to OnePlus 8. The OnePlus 9 takes over the photo block in the upper left corner as on most mobiles today. The OnePlus logo is kept in the center.

At the front, the borders are still a little smaller than on the latest models. The punching system built into the top left corner of the screen to house the front camera remains in use on these new devices. The manufacturer keeps on the slice the alert cursor specific to the brand’s smartphones. The screen will be curved on the Pro model, while the OnePlus 9 and 9 Lite would be equipped with a flat slab.

Of course, there is a USB-C port at the bottom of the mobile, alongside a speaker and a microSD card slot. The OnePlus 9 Pro would be IP68 certified and water resistant, like the OnePlus 8 Pro. It can therefore be submerged at a depth of 1.5 meters up to 30 minutes. OnePlus has long preferred not to integrate this waterproofing certification into its smartphones so as not to increase their price, the OnePlus 9 Pro will be the second to benefit. This is further proof of the brand’s desired upscaling.

screen on OnePlus 9

OnePlus 9 would be equipped with a 6.55-inch “flat” Super AMOLED display with full HD 1080p definition, like the OnePlus 8. On the other hand, it should benefit from a better refresh frequency from 90 Hz to 120 Hz.

The curved screen of the OnePlus 9 Pro looks even more stunning. It will have a diagonal of between 6.7 and 6.8 inches, always with Super AMOLED technology for deep blacks, better contrasts and the “Always On Display” display, a handy feature originally available recently on Oxygen OS. The refresh frequency of 120 Hz promises a nice fluidity and the image definition QHD 1440p will allow a display quality among the best in the smartphone market.

The information about the OnePlus 9 Lite is less certain, but we are talking about a slab that would be similar to that of the OnePlus 9 in one detail: the refresh frequency would be limited to 90 Hz. In fact, it would be the same as the one found on the OnePlus 8.

Performance and Memory of OnePlus 9

The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro will of course be equipped with the most powerful chip on the market: Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888. This is the first SoC engraved in 5nm of the American giant, which is working with Samsung for their manufacture. While waiting to know concretely the performance of the system on chip on the OnePlus 9, let’s settle for its technical sheet. The Kryo 680 octo-core processor consists of a very powerful ARM Cortex X1 core clocked at 2.84 GHz, three ARM Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.4 GHz, and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz for the simplest tasks.

The GPU, the Adreno 660, is according to Qualcomm 35% more powerful and 20% more energy efficient than its predecessor. It supports HDR10, HDR10 and Dolby Vision for video and HDR for video games. It is capable of displaying 60 frames per second in 4K definition and 144 frames per second in Quad HD quality.

The Snapdragon 888 also features the all-new 5G-compatible Snapdragon X60 modem. It supports the majority of the frequency bands operated by the new generation of mobile, including the so-called millimeter bands. The 5G multi-SIM also becomes possible, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the OnePlus 9 will be eligible.

But then, what about the OnePlus 9 Lite? Would it benefit from a mid-range processor? No, not really. The OnePlus 9 Lite should be equipped with a Snapdragon 865, a SoC so far reserved for high-end smartphones. Clearly, it won’t be the latest addition to the Qualcomm family, but the smartphone should deliver excellent performance.

In terms of memory, several configurations will be offered for each device. You can expect to find 8GB variants of RAM and 128GB of storage space or 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal memory. It is plausible that the OnePlus 9 Pro snubs the weakest features to focus solely on the highest-end specs.

In any case, the quality of the hardware combined with OnePlus’ software know-how and optimizations should ensure premium performance, as always with the manufacturer.

OnePlus 9 Battery, Battery Life and Charging

We should have three different proposals in that regard. First, the OnePlus 9 Lite and OnePlus 9 would carry a 4500 mAh battery. The OnePlus 9 Pro, which requires more energy with its larger screen, QHD and 120 Hz, would see a 4750 mAhbattery. As a reminder, the OnePlus 8 had a battery capacity of 4300 mAh and the OnePlus 8 Pro of 4510 mAh. With this increase in capacity and a SoC Snapdragon 888 that promises to be less energy-intensive than the Snapdragon 865.

Wire charging has been a specialty of OnePlus for a long time now, its next generation of smartphones will continue to benefit from its so effective Warp Charge technology. The OnePlus 9 Lite is compatible with a charge of up to 30W, while the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro can count on an ultra-fast charge of 65W.

Only the OnePlus 9 Pro has a wireless charging feature (30W). As with water resistance certification, the manufacturer considers it an expensive feature that is only useful to a minority share of users. It is therefore only offered on the most high-end model.

OnePlus 9 Camera

This is the aspect on which OnePlus has a little trouble and for which we hope for the most improvements. It is rumored that OnePlus now uses Leica, just like its competitor Huawei. According to the various leaks on the design of the smartphone that have reached us, the OnePlus 9 Lite and OnePlus 9 would be equipped with a triple photo sensor, while the OnePlus 9 Pro would benefit from an additional module.

We should have a 50MP main photo sensor on all three smartphones, with an f/1.9 aperture. The OnePlus would also benefit from a 20MP wide-angle sensor (f/1.8 aperture). As for the 3rd sensor, it would be a telephoto of 12 MP (f/3.4).

It is likely that only the OnePlus 9 Pro has a telephoto lens, probably with optical image stabilization, allowing optical zoom up to 3x. The identity of the fourth lens of the OnePlus 9 Pro is not yet known. It could be a macro module, a depth sensor or a color filter camera like on the OnePlus 8 Pro last year.

Oxygen OS 11

It’s the hallmark of OnePlus, its Oxygen OS overlay is one of the best Android interfaces on the market. With the Oxygen OS 11 update based on Android 11, it’s getting even better, including getting some good ideas from One UI, Samsung’s interface.

On the program: new themes and clocks for the Always On Display function, the ability to respond quickly to Instagram and WhatsApp messages in the middle of a video game game, an improved dark mode, a revised and corrected weather application, optimizations for gaming and of course a redesign of the interface in general, which is becoming more modern.

The OnePlus 9 series will be delivered directly under Oxygen OS 11 and will benefit from three years of feature updates. The new OnePlus smartphones usually receive among the first the major Update of Android that follows, Android 12 should be available very soon after its release.
